1. Scope
This policy applies to the WordTrail browser extension and this informational website. The website does not use analytics, advertising trackers, or cross-site cookies. It stores only a local language preference in the visitor's browser.
2. Data WordTrail handles
- Account information: email address and authentication session when a user chooses to create an account or sign in.
- Learning data: saved words and phrases, translations, pronunciation information, example sentences, surrounding context, source page titles and URLs, highlight counts, card edits, review history, and language preferences.
- Reader data: imported text or DRM-free EPUB content, book metadata, reading settings, and reading progress.
- Translation requests: the selected word or phrase and its source and target language codes.
- Translation authentication: a separate anonymous Supabase identity used to authorize translation requests, enforce quotas, and reduce abuse.
3. How data is used
- Page text is inspected locally so visible words and selected phrases can be made interactive.
- WordTrail does not collect general browsing history. Page information is stored only when it is attached to a word or phrase the user chooses to save.
- Translation requests are sent only when a user requests a translation.
- Signed-in users may synchronize learning data and reader data so the same account can continue across supported browsers or devices.
- The service credential for Google Cloud Translation is stored only as a server-side secret and is not included in the extension.
4. Service providers
WordTrail uses Supabase for authentication, translation-request authorization, optional cloud synchronization, and server-side Edge Functions. Translation text is forwarded by the WordTrail Supabase Edge Function to Google Cloud Translation. These providers process data only as needed to deliver the requested product functions.
6. Storage, retention, and user control
- Local cards, books, settings, and review data remain in browser extension storage until the user deletes them, clears extension storage, or uninstalls the extension.
- Users can delete individual cards and books from WordTrail.
- Signing out stops synchronization on that device but does not automatically delete cloud data.
- Users may request deletion of their cloud account and synchronized data through the support contact shown on the Google Chrome Add-ons listing. A direct support email may also be displayed on this website once configured.
7. Security
WordTrail uses encrypted HTTPS connections. Cloud records are scoped to the authenticated user through database access policies. No method of internet transmission or storage is guaranteed to be completely secure, but reasonable technical controls are used to reduce unauthorized access.
8. Children
WordTrail is a general language-learning tool and is not directed specifically to children under the minimum age required to consent to online services in their jurisdiction. The developer does not knowingly collect personal data from children in violation of applicable law.
9. Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated when WordTrail's features, service providers, or legal obligations change. The effective date at the top of this page will be revised when material changes are made.
